Britain's noisiest library

When most of us think of libraries, we conjure up thoughts of places were the rustling of a crisp packet would sound as out of place as an electric guitar in a symphony orchestra.

So when the library opened its door to music and sound effects, the locals certainly raised a few eyebrows, in delight!

Now you’ll find the noisy pirates, memorable sounds from Finding Nemo and a whole host of other energetic effects playing in Howden Library; even the whale song.

The idea was the brainchild of Andy Quick, who works for the pioneering inventor Easifall International, thinking that the local children and their parents would be encouraged to visit Howden Library if there was a place for young ones to play safely and enjoy themselves. So they installed a sensory floor in the library, which plays music and sound effects when children walk or jump on the areas fitted with sensory pads below the surface.

The EasiSounds system used in Howden includes a multi-coloured safe play area, the same kind used in playgrounds throughout the world. Howden Library took advantage of Easifall’s ability to design the entire area, with the EasiSounds sound pads located below a giant picture on the floor. Parents find that it encourages play and learning, as children activate special sounds, when they stand on selected parts of the library floor area.

The all-weather system has already being adopted by nurseries, schools and tourist attractions looking to provide a sensory experience for children and tourists. Olwyn Sheridan, Director at Easifall says, “We’ve only just launched EasiSounds and the response has been remarkable.” Adding, “Clients are buying as soon as they see the system, plus with the ability to change sounds which is as easy as adding an iPod or CD player, it’s gives more scope to make it exciting for children.”

For those interested in seeing Britain’s noisiest library, visit the town of Howden. So, now the sound barrier has been broken in libraries, what next, Eric Clapton playing at the Proms this year?
